Tiny Baetis mayflies are perhaps the most commonly encountered and imitated by anglers on all American trout streams due to their great abundance, widespread distribution, and trout-friendly emergence habits.

I like this one. Glacial river, taiga, tundra, and the perpetual ice cover of a massive high ridge dozens of miles away in the Wrangell Mountains.

Kogotus Stonefly Nymph Kogotus Stonefly Nymph

Dorsal view of a Kogotus (Perlodidae) Stonefly Nymph from Mystery Creek #199 in Washington

This one pretty clearly keys to Kogotus, but it also looks fairly different from specimens I caught in the same creek about a month later in the year. With only one species of the genus known in Washington, I'm not sure about the answer to this ID.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Back in the day when I met my idol on Armstrong Spring Creek circa 1969

This was taken right where the water wells up out of the ground on Armstrong Spring Creek.

This is one of my biggest Montana spring creek fish - of course on top!

From the left down; most of row 2, all of row 3 & 4 and seven flies in row 5 have loop spun thoraxes.

From the top down; five flies in row #3 have loop spun thoraxes, the two flies on the left in row #4, the first five flies on the left of row #6, and the first three black stones ion the left in row #7. The other three have black Estaz thoraxes. The legs of the first three of row #7 are black Krystal Flash.
