I was not fishing, but happened to be at an unrelated social event on a hill above this tiny creek (which I never even saw) when this stonefly flew by me. I assume it came from there. Some key characteristics are tricky to follow, but process of elimination ultimately led me to Sweltsa borealis. It is reassuringly similar to this specimen posted by Bob Newell years ago. It is also so strikingly similar to this nymph from the same river system that I'm comfortable identifying that nymph from this adult. I was especially pleased with the closeup photo of four mites parasitizing this one.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Oh yeah, gotta have some hellgies! Corydalus sp. Can't get away from midges! A mixed bag of Chironomidae, some to be identified to genus? Riffle beetles too! Macronychus adult Larvae too, Neoelmis sp., a nice shot showing the closed front coxal cavities Not many stoneflies turned up in our samples but here's a nice big Acroneuria for ya!

Leopard frog in the creek. Nice pool, looks very fishable, only has minnows, chubs, a few carp, and maybe, just maybe an isolated northern in a pool here and there. Grave of a child of the first settler in my home town in the 1870s.

Optics for fly fisherman Trusty Bushnell rubber-armored waterproof 10x42s, bought these in 2000 for my Isle Royale trip! Todd in the Coppler Creek Canyon above the powerline cut, a serious bushwhack...but there's brookies in there! Not that they're easy...but what a cool place, full of bog plants like sundews and wild cranberries The boys in the canyon against a lush backdrop of green I'm gonna do some more exploring down in here - if I have enough energy! New reel case - YES there are spinning reels in there but despair not... ...the saltwater fly reels are at the ready, and if you count spools they outnumber the spinning reels! Yup, the Lamson 3-pack is new, and loaded with three 7-weight lines I have had for ? long: WF Fl, DT Fl, WF ST For handling big toothy saltwater fish Saltwater flies I - nice new boat box!

This guy kept an eye on me as I was launching the kayak into Tawas Lake - green-backed heron Joe & Todd heading out into Tawas Lake Pretty juicy looking panfish habitat, though we didn't get many strikes The open lake proved to be a bit too windy... Brisk enough to drag my itty bitty kayak anchor (with 5 lbs. of weeds)
