The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

Kogotus Stonefly NymphKogotus Stonefly Nymph
Dorsal view of a Kogotus (Perlodidae) Stonefly Nymph from Mystery Creek #199 in Washington
This one pretty clearly keys to Kogotus, but it also looks fairly different from specimens I caught in the same creek about a month later in the year. With only one species of the genus known in Washington, I'm not sure about the answer to this ID.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Trusty Bushnell rubber-armored waterproof 10x42s, bought these in 2000 for my Isle Royale trip! New (used) B&L stereozoom 7x-30x with a Unitron ring illuminator...perfect for the home entomologist! B&L Dynazoom, used but doesn't look it...I can go over 1000x with this one! Mrs. Lenihan's 3rd grade classroom microscope! (or at least the same exact model) For those nights when they're not biting and you're home early...

My co-pilot Ron is at our favorite table in the parking lot of the hotel, having a (root)beer Front of the Ranch House Hotel on Marathon Key: spontaneous choice, stroke of luck! With apologies to Beck: got two coconuts and a seagrape tree! My new favorite tree: gumbo-limbo (Bursera simaruba) Close up of the bark...these trees can get 60 feet tall and stand up to hurricanes!

Not one but TWO new 7-weights! New reel case - YES there are spinning reels in there but despair not... ...the saltwater fly reels are at the ready, and if you count spools they outnumber the spinning reels! Yup, the Lamson 3-pack is new, and loaded with three 7-weight lines I have had for ? long: WF Fl, DT Fl, WF ST For handling big toothy saltwater fish Saltwater flies I - nice new boat box!

This guy kept an eye on me as I was launching the kayak into Tawas Lake - green-backed heron Joe & Todd heading out into Tawas Lake Pretty juicy looking panfish habitat, though we didn't get many strikes The open lake proved to be a bit too windy... Brisk enough to drag my itty bitty kayak anchor (with 5 lbs. of weeds)
