Salmonflies
Pteronarcys californica

The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

Dorsal view of a Ephemerella mucronata (Ephemerellidae) Mayfly Nymph from the Yakima River in Washington
This is an interesting one. Following the keys in Merritt R.W., Cummins, K.W., and Berg, M.B. (2019) and Jacobus et al. (2014), it keys clearly to Ephemerella. Jacobus et al provide a key to species, but some of the characteristics are tricky to interpret without illustrations. If I didn't make any mistakes, this one keys to Ephemerella mucronata, which has not previously been reported any closer to here than Montana and Alberta. The main character seems to fit well: "Abdominal terga with prominent, paired, subparallel, spiculate ridges." Several illustrations or descriptions of this holarctic species from the US and Europe seem to match, including the body length, tarsal claws and denticles, labial palp, and gill shapes. These sources include including Richard Allen's original description of this species in North America under the now-defunct name E. moffatae in Allen RK (1977) and the figures in this description of the species in Italy.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

nice Eric. If we get the weather they are predicting, it may be a little dicey up there...

The forecast for Saturday is a high of 48 degrees and a 60% chance of showers. More like steelhead weather than trout fishing. The flow was 1100 cfs yesterday and down to 315 cfs today.

Eric,

To the other Eric (Crepuscular) and I, really bad weather just means bar food and beer, followed by all night tying sessions back in the room with more beer, and a lot of beer induced fishing BS. :)

"Yeah Spence, the way Datus Proper ties that wing is pretty and all, but too damn difficult. I just wrap the damn thing and snip off the bottom hackles
With scissors. Done!"

Spence replies, "Damn! Must be time to go to bed. These are our last two beers. Hell! It's almost time for Jonas to make our breakfast."

Haha yep, that's all too familiar!

By Jonas I'm assuming you mean from the Feathered Hook? Isn't he just a peach? I love that shop.

I feel bad for the guy, someone should have given him a pair of scissors. ;)

Maybe I should write a book, "What the Drunk Fly Tier Said"...

Actually, you would of had to have been there. :)

Jonas...Yes. I have a friend that goes there from here every year for Drakes. He likes to tell people that if you did a police style line up of guys, including Jonas, and you asked which one's the fly shop owner or which one's heading off to jail tomorrow, Jonas would be the latter. :)

He is a lot of fun, and cooks up a mean breakfast! Even for this vegetarian...Though I was concerned when he said, just sit down and don't look at the stove...:)

Maybe there are times when you shouldn't be playing with scissors...You think? :)
