Hexagenia limbata

The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

Here Oksrukuyik Creek flows away from the Dalton Highway toward the pipeline. It eventually grows into one of the major rivers of the North Slope, and the main drainage to the west of the Sag, but where it crosses the road it's just a small grayling stream.

This Skwala nymph still has a couple months left to go before hatching, but it's still a good representative of its species, which was extremely abundant in my sample for a stonefly of this size. It's obvious why the Yakima is known for its Skwala hatch.

I think I recognize the look in Oscar's eyes. Cats have a knack for playing the cute act to their advantage while they are cooking up ways to mess with us. I had a favorite cat when I got married. He is long gone, but still much missed. Despite that, I swear that there were times when he was plotting ways to kill me in my sleep.
