Tiny Baetis mayflies are perhaps the most commonly encountered and imitated by anglers on all American trout streams due to their great abundance, widespread distribution, and trout-friendly emergence habits.
Option 1 | Option 2 |
---|---|
2 small ring sclerites posterodorsally at base of each lateral hump of abdominal segment I (sf 19.285) | 2 or more sclerites dissimilar in shape at base of each lateral hump (sf 19.283) |
Case tubular, slightly curved, tapered, made of mostly of rocks with some small pieces of wood incorporated (sf 19.436) | |
Remaining genera: Desmona and Monophylax | Remaining genera: Chilostigma, Clostoeca, Grensia, and Psychoglypha |
1 Example SpecimenThis one was surprisingly straightforward to identify. The lack of a sclerite at the base of the lateral hump narrows the field quite a bit, and the other options followed fairly obvious characteristics to Clostoeca, which only has one species, Clostoeca disjuncta.
