Artistic view of a Male Pteronarcys californica (Pteronarcyidae) (Giant Salmonfly) Stonefly Adult from the Gallatin River in Montana
Salmonflies
Pteronarcys californica

The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

Dorsal view of a Grammotaulius betteni (Limnephilidae) (Northern Caddisfly) Caddisfly Larva from the Yakima River in Washington
This is a striking caddis larva with an interesting color pattern on the head. Here are some characteristics I was able to see under the microscope, but could not easily expose for a picture:
- The prosternal horn is present.
- The mandible is clearly toothed, not formed into a uniform scraper blade.
- The seems to be only 2 major setae on the ventral edge of the hind femur.
- Chloride epithelia seem to be absent from the dorsal side of any abdominal segments.
Based on these characteristics and the ones more easily visible from the pictures, this seems to be Grammotaulius. The key's description of the case is spot-on: "Case cylindrical, made of longitudinally arranged sedge or similar leaves," as is the description of the markings on the head, "Dorsum of head light brownish yellow with numerous discrete, small, dark spots." The spot pattern on the head is a very good match to figure 19.312 of Merritt R.W., Cummins, K.W., and Berg, M.B. (2019). The species ID is based on Grammotaulius betteni being the only species of this genus known in Washington state.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

wow, what a sight, very complete, great insect pics and streams too and some great "intellectuals" here who are very knowledgeable. i love trout fishing and have been fly fishing for about two years now. i fish predominately northern michigan since it's so close. i've been throwing hardware long before i ever started fly fishing and i must say the population is way down-fish population that is. not to mention the human population, yet i still seem to catch less and less fish each year. of course they can't be stocking, or doing the stream improvements the way they used to(it's good for T.U. and others to help). granny and her lib friends ran the state into the ground and the budget is in the tank. she helped hussein get in the office, that's when he should have stopped listening to her. thank God the good people finally came to their senses and went to the ballot box and we now have a majority of people who will bring the state back to it's beauty and prosperity we once had. great that the nation came to their senses, in more rural areas than ever.

Never mind... I wrote something a little caustic and have reconsidered.

Have a nice day and catch lots of fish...

Lee,

Let me help you out here...OK?

Redman...I think what Lee is hinting at, though I would never speak for him, is that we kind of consider it "bad form" to politicize your posts here. This is a site where folks can go who are interested in fly fishing and entomology and little else...There are a zillion-and-one other spots for that sort of thing.

The "intellectuals", as you put it, on this site, myself included are not neccesarily "militia" friendly. You want to talk trout and all things trout that's fine...All we are asking is you use a little restraint and try to understand what we are up to here and leave the other stuff at home.

Thanks!

Spence

Will miracles ever cease!!?? We may change the world yet, one quietly rational dialog at a time!

Who knows, we may even get that Oldredbarn dude to shorten up his over-the-top posts...

I'm also glad to see a civil response to Redman. I actually have very different political views from his, and I probably feel as strongly about my views as he does about his; but I am happy to say little about my views in the interest of keeping things civil. I will only say that I hope that all politicians and those who support them insist that we pursue policies that are friendly to trout, fisherwomen, fishermen, and all other living creatures.

If I suggest you meant to type "new here " instead of "knew here" , would you consider me as one of the intelectuals?JK
All political and religious topics are very subjective and sometimes emotionally charged , and thus should have a different venue for discussion. This is a great site , ecspecially if you are into the entomolgy of the forage our target species (trout) rely upon.Lots of knowledgeable guys that are eager to help.

Roger,

Lord knows we could use an editor on this site, especially that Oldredbarn dude...We might as well appoint Fred to the post since my first choice Lloyd is already thinking about the ski slopes and doesn't have time to ride rough-shod over this bunch of, wishing there was a spell check on this site, anglers!

I don't know how well I would do as an editor or spell checker . Remember I'm from Louisiana . We tend to spell different ,ie ( "geaux " instead of "go"). Besides it would make about as much sense as having Arnold Swartzeneiger give an enounciation seminar.

I'm not knew. Hey, I'll get the ball rolling.

Redman: What in the hell are you writing about? You're certainly not an intellectual. I think you meant to log in to the Dum As Fli Fisherman's Forum.

How's that?

Happy Thanksgiving,

Bruce

Yep. It's one of the things I do well. I guess you could call it God-given ability.

I'm a good spitter, too.

JAD. When are we going fishing?

knew here not new here, duh, what would that mean if it were accurate spelling? what a sight, as opposed to what a site. as in what a sight of pathetic liberals hanging around all stroking each others' egos. i'm sure your discussion of politics here is down to non-existant. your ideas have been manifesting through your complete control of both house and senate with a socialist/communist sitting at the head of the table. and you idiots still can't pass your utopian moronic socialist laws. the only bipartisanship has been against the presidents' bills(sorry george s. i know those are actually yours)and the ones you have passed have created such a backlash we had a historic election. historic for how many seats were taken by one party and historic because your crazy ideas created a whole new party. and you still haven't changed. you cry for tolerance in the world but here you are going absolutely rabid over one post out of how many that go on here. what a sad state you all are in. even lastchane believes whole heartedly that because i don't agree with his destructive ideas for america that there is no way i'm an intellectual. it's so nice to be able to go to a site where i know i'll find the fringe left. the cooks whose political ideas are a danger to not only themselves but the good and will of the entire united states.

i told you i was right, i told you i'd be back.

I KNEW it. I went back and did a little research on five or six controversial topics, which still stick out in my mind, and I was surprised to find a good number of very divisive posts from a good number of poster’s have mysteriously disappeared. If they are still there and someone was to re-post them faces would be covered in egg. Maybe it’s best that they are gone.

Just for the record, Your Anus...I prefer to be called a "classical marxist"...If you please.

the cooks whose political ideas are a danger to not only themselves but the good and will of the entire united states.

I know you are sensitive to being corrected but its "kooks" not cooks...Maybe you should slow your rant down a bit so we can understand what the hell it is that you are babbling on about. My dictionary ("it's not just a Webster's it's a Merriam Webster's)defines "kook" as "one whose ideas or actions are eccentric, fantastic, or insane"...It lists as a synonym SCREWBALL...Maybe they are on to you man!

Speaking of "a danger to themselves"...Hanging around a site where your only purpose is to rile folks up sounds a bit masturbatory don't you think? Again my dictionary's helpful here...definition #2 "excessively self-absorbed or self-indulgent"...Maybe you can find another site where you and your like-minded circle-jerks can stroke each other in to a froth! Now don't hurt yourself there mister!

I know that you think you are right and your confused little brain keeps telling you over-and-over just how right you are, but there is no longer a "left" in this country only you and your buddy Newt and everyone else that disagrees with you.

Well put, Spence, but the best response to a child crying for attention may be simply to ignore him. With luck he might just go away and quit bothering those whose maturity attracts him.
