Salmonflies
Pteronarcys californica

The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

Dorsal view of a Holocentropus (Polycentropodidae) Caddisfly Larva from the Yakima River in Washington
This one seems to tentatively key to Holocentropus, although I can't make out the anal spines in Couplet 7 of the Key to Genera of Polycentropodidae Larvae nor the dark bands in Couplet 4 of the Key to Genera of Polycentropodidae Larvae, making me wonder if I went wrong somewhere in keying it out. I don't see where that could have happened, though. It might also be that it's a very immature larva and doesn't possess all the identifying characteristics in the key yet. If Holocentropus is correct, then Holocentropus flavus and Holocentropus interruptus are the two likely possibilities based on range, but I was not able to find a description of their larvae.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

FYI...

Any College guys looking to spend your summer on the fabled Madison River near West Yellowstone, MT there are a couple of openings at Campfire Lodge Resort. Includes room, meals and a salary. (If I were in college I would go for it in a flash!)

I am doing some web work for the new owner Jim Slattery and he mentioned he his looking for a summer help, so I thought about posting it here. The river is awesome and the scenery is spectacular!

See www.CampfireLodgeWestYellowstone.com to learn some more about the lodge. The web site is still under construction as Jim has time to gather and send me the info. You can call Jim at(406) 646-7258, if interested.

Dang. I'm stuck in Texas at the Prairie Chicken refuge but I would do that in a heartbeat.

I actually work at a campground in the summer, heck I would rather work at that Campground and be flyfishing all the time then be at the one I'm at now.

I will be looking for a summer job once the first summer session of college is out here. But that is a far drive for me.
