Hex Mayflies
Hexagenia limbata

The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

Some characteristics from the microscope images for the tentative species id: The postero-lateral projections are found only on segment 9, not segment 8. Based on the key in Jacobus et al. (2014), it appears to key to Neoleptophlebia adoptiva or Neoleptophlebia heteronea, same as this specimen with pretty different abdominal markings. However, distinguishing between those calls for comparing the lengths of the second and third segment of the labial palp, and this one (like the other one) only seems to have two segments. So I'm stuck on them both. It's likely that the fact that they're immature nymphs stymies identification in some important way.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

I wanted to make all aware that Don Ward from Keystone Fly Rod Company has teamed up with guide Eric Stroup, and they are hosting a bamboo fly rod building class this summer.

The class runs from June 12 - 16, and all will be staying at Eric's new lodge overlooking the gorge of the Little Juniata River in Central Pennsylvania.

If you are interested, additional information can be found @ Don's page: http://keystoneflyrodcompany.com/

I have built some bamboo fly rods over the years, and to know that you will have one built in five days, plus stay in an incredible lodge and fish the Little J...well, it doesn't get too much better than that!

I've always wanted to do something like this! Unfortunately I live on the wrong side of the country.

"By taking him fishing"

I'm sorry to hear that, Gus, and it should be a great event. The fishing in the area is incredible, and the lodge will be a great place for everything.

Building a bamboo fly rod is so much fun, plus learning to do so in a hands-on event over a week with other people makes the experience that much better.

I'm looking forward to seeing how many are going to participate, and see if Don's class begins to turn into a yearly event.
