Hex Mayflies
Hexagenia limbata

The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

With a bit of help from the microscope, this specimen keys clearly and unsurprisingly to Hydropsyche.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

This afternoon I went down to the Chena river and tried my hand at some more grayling fishing. I used my favorite fly for grayling (a bead-head Brassie) and caught about a dozen in the course of a few hours. I also tried a caddis dry, but I only caught one with that.
I was very surprised considering it was a sweltering 85 degrees today.

Sorry, but since it was catch and release only for grayling I did not get any photos.
