Hex Mayflies
Hexagenia limbata

The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

This dun emerged from a mature nymph on my desk. Unfortunately its wings didn't perfectly dry out.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.
Troutnut is a project started in 2003 by salmonid ecologist Jason "Troutnut" Neuswanger to help anglers and fly tyers unabashedly embrace the entomological side of the sport. Learn more about Troutnut or support the project for an enhanced experience here.

Someone identified the bug that looks like a piece of white fuzz floating around. I can't find the thread or remember the name. It was recent so I'm hoping someone can re-post the thread.
Thanks,
Bruce

Certainly no more than 59 seconds closer Kurt, but who's counting. :-)

Sorry. Wow, three! I guess it's my age. I'll try and remember this time.
Thanks, Guys.

I thought it was an aphid, but when I looked at images online I didn't see any woolly white bugs, only the hairless variety.

Sounds like a fluff of cottonwood with a Sailidae pupa centered in the fluff providing the surface motion. I think I just discovered a new trout source food vehicle. Now to the lab to produce the replica.
