Baetis

Tiny Baetis mayflies are perhaps the most commonly encountered and imitated by anglers on all American trout streams due to their great abundance, widespread distribution, and trout-friendly emergence habits.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.
Troutnut is a project started in 2003 by salmonid ecologist Jason "Troutnut" Neuswanger to help anglers and fly tyers unabashedly embrace the entomological side of the sport. Learn more about Troutnut or support the project for an enhanced experience here.

A good friend, Andres Touceda, is holding a contest for tiers of realistics. He sent me a link to a promotional video about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3aA5TRiS_M

If any of you are the competitive type and want to try your hand against some of the world's best, check it out. Presumably, since he's hosting the contest, Andres won't be making any entries himself, which is good news for everyone else. For the intrepid tier, here's a link to his site: http://www.andrestouceda.com/

Pretty neat, but I wouldn't call it fly tying. It is more like model building.

It could not be worth a serious tier's time. This is the same guy that told me flies don't need hooks . You guys have fun making and judging models .Those of us that tie our flies will not particpate.

Interesting comments, guys. I have decided that this is worth another thread posing the question, "What is flytying?"

On the other hand, I would like to express my gratitude to TROUTNUT.COM for all the contents we can find in this web page. I knew about TROUTNUT when I first entered Realistic Fly Tyer forum (some years ago), and since then you have been a reference for me.

Thank you. AndrésT

Realistic tying has taken another death blow. This farce of a compitition listed as realistic FISHING flies is being judged by unqualified and bias judges , and will no doubt confirm to everyone that realistics have no rules and are not considered a genre of tying but are free exspression of art. This is not a fishing fly compitition. It is an art compitition.
I really don't have a problem with what your doing . I'ts what your calling it.Call it insect art compitition. you've already made hooks optional.

Mi querido Alfredo,my dear Fred
You are a very intolerant guy. Never provide anything positive, open your mouth only to utter lies, inconsistencies and threats. But you're my favorite clown, never change, always make me laugh a lot.
Ps Always trying to put the triangle in the square. I hope the classical music soothes you. Un gran abrazo, big hug. Adrian

I didn't realize that my posting about Andres's contest would cause so much strife. I don't know Fred or Adrian, but I can attest that Andres is a gentleman who is not confrontational in the least and is by no means looking to pick a fight. If anything, he is a kind and creative person simply trying to add his own mark to super-realistic flies. Whether or not we all agree on what exactly to call his art, as a rule those on this forum welcome others until they make themselves unwelcome by either attacking others or being generally annoying without adding anything constructive to the group.

It seems to me that Fred and Adrian have joined the forum just to find another place to go at each other. Fred has posted a pattern of a very nice fly he's tied, but I suspect that his contributing is secondary to his goal of denigrating Andres. Perhaps, Fred and Adrian, you should find more ways to constructively contribute to the forum and find another venue for your conflict.

First I apologize to others if they felt offended. but I hold firmly to everything said Fred ,is a bad person who offends free to all, should be treated with contempt because it is a dishonest guy, causing problems anywhere.
About Andres, I mean that is one of the best flytyers today and a better person, you deserve my respect.
Best Regards Adrian

(All I am going to say about this "matter" is that I can not stand an ill-mannered individual.)

Anyway, the good news is that a new judge has agree to cooperate in the contest; Mr Robert Mead, one of the first realistic fly tyers, an arrowhead that points forward for those of us who started later.Thank you Master.

I don't want to enter into a heated discussion. And I applaud the creativity here. But I see Fred's point. I would guess that many of those "flies" don't perform very well onstream. Realistic to us doesn't often translate to the water and trout. Tying for fish requires something else: putting em to the test on the water and to fish. Often, epiphanies at the vice don't pan out on the water.

Hello Paul,

The title of the contest is:"International Realistic Fishing Flies Contest".

Somebody asked me this question:

"One other thing: Your title of the contest says "Realistic Fishing Flies"

Does that mean that you would "fish" with them? Does that mean that no "Art" type show flies can be entered, and only flies that
are actually fished.

I know it may just be a semantics issue, but over here the inclusion of "fishing" in the contest title would indicate that you want realistic style flies that people actually fish and not some expensive collector fly that is only displayed and not fished."

Correct, only REALISTIC FISHING flies that can actually be fished.

This is the link to the contest information: http://www.andrestouceda.com/contenidos/concurso2011/EN/concurso.php

I hope you can participate in the contest.

Thanks Andres. A wonderful thing you have going. I won't be entering, mostly because I just don't have time for another hobby. I've worked hard on my flies and do have my Ult seris, which stands for "utlimate" in terms of realism to fish. I could take such flies and dress them up for Homonid judges, but just won't be getting around to it.

Hey, have you seen the Chinese grass weaving? They make some pretty neat insects folding grass leaves. There are techniques in there worth looking at I would think.

Thank you anyway Paul.

This link could help people interested in this kind of art:http://www.iowacapi.org/content.asp?ID=2927&T=2007+Chinese+Grass+Weaving+Artist+Nian+Shi&C=396

I saw this technique years ago in Puerto Rico. Artists used palm leaves. I even tried some patterns and have a pair of hoppers, out of palm leaves, at home. I agree with you in that their technique could be of interest for someone.

Best regards.
