Artistic view of a Male Pteronarcys californica (Pteronarcyidae) (Giant Salmonfly) Stonefly Adult from the Gallatin River in Montana
Salmonflies
Pteronarcys californica

The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

When asked what I just caught that monster on I showed him. He put on his magnifiers and said, "I can't believe they can see that."

After reexamination I think I do know this spot. Weather permitting, I may take a drive up this weekend with camera in hand.

It's not one of my favorite spots. In fact, I don't think I've ever caught a fish at the specific location in the picture, but I've caught plenty in that general reach of the river.

Jason, I am thinking of downstream from that, about 2 or 3 bends below that. There is a bridge just above that tree about 50 yards if that is the tree I am thinking of.

John, if your last post is correct, then I guess I can stay home this weekend.

I think you guys got it. This picture was taken from the bridge, in the middle of the night, at that tree backlit by the moonlight.
