The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

This species is common in the Northwest and present but uncommon in the East.

In 55 records from GBIF, this species has been collected at elevations ranging from 16 to 10840 ft, with an average (median) of 5092 ft.
