Hex Mayflies
Hexagenia limbata

The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

This species was fairly abundant in a February sample of the upper Yakima.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Biography & Thoughts
My dad turned me on to fly fishing when I was very young. I would use some flies but worms as well in my teen years but wanted to fish exclusively with flies but didn't know how to match hatched etc. so I didn't get as serious until I moved south ,in my late forties, (NC) and started mountain fishing in NC at South Mt's. State Park and Wilson Creek. I got more in to it and now exclusively fish with my own hand tied flies, something else important my dad taught me.
