The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

True Fly Family Dolichopodidae

I have not found any reference to these flies in the angling literature and they are likely never important to match. However, I did find a few sweeping a net through the grass overhanging a small mountain trout stream.
