Blue-winged Olives
Baetis

Tiny Baetis mayflies are perhaps the most commonly encountered and imitated by anglers on all American trout streams due to their great abundance, widespread distribution, and trout-friendly emergence habits.

Lateral view of a Clostoeca disjuncta (Limnephilidae) (Northern Caddisfly) Caddisfly Larva from the Yakima River in Washington
This one was surprisingly straightforward to identify. The lack of a sclerite at the base of the lateral hump narrows the field quite a bit, and the other options followed fairly obvious characteristics to Clostoeca, which only has one species, Clostoeca disjuncta.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Alaska Range twilight time lapse

I shot a picture every twenty seconds for a few hours as the sunlight faded over the Alaska Range above Black Rapids, and compressed them into this time lapse. It's amazing how much the mountains directly affect the clouds, and I never really appreciated it until I saw them in motion like this.

The old small-scale coal mine, along with erosion from Ober Creek, left these coal seams exposed on a hillside, mixed in with other sedimentary rocks.

This is some species of lupine, but I'm not sure which.

This panorama of the Alaska Range from a high point on Coal Mine Road gives you a taste of the vastness of the landscape. Of course, it has to be viewed full-size.

Partial solar eclipse of June 1, 2011, from Fairbanks, Alaska

By Troutnut on May 31st, 2011

Photos by Troutnut from the Tanana River in Alaska

This partial solar eclipse today was most prominent across parts of Siberia, the Arctic Ocean, and Scandanavia, but I caught the outer edge of it here in Fairbanks, Alaska. I went out to a quiet spot next to the Tanana River behind the airport, and shot this composite photo of several short exposures of the sun during the eclipse, and one longer exposure at the end, capturing the thin clouds that crept into the frame.
