The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

Ephemerella aurivillii Mayfly Nymph Pictures

I'm pretty sure this is Ephemerella aurivillii. The body is 11mm long, which rules out most other species, and the hind legs seem to be more than 1.5 times longer than the fore legs -- a key characteristic for this species.

This specimen isn't in the best of shape, as it's missing all three tails, but it's the only one of its species I captured in this sample.

This mayfly was collected from Mongaup Creek in New York on May 6th, 2007 and added to Troutnut.com by Troutnut on May 18th, 2007.
