Salmonflies
Pteronarcys californica

The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

This specimen appears to be of the same species as this one collected in the same spot two months earlier. The identification of both is tentative. This one suffered some physical damage before being photographed, too, so the colors aren't totally natural. I was mostly photographing it to test out some new camera setting idea, which worked really well for a couple of closeups.
27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Photos by Troutnut from the Susitna River and Denali Highway in Alaska

Mount Deborah and Hess Mountains. Two of the greatest peaks of the Alaska Range rise behind the braided, glacial Susitna River. These massive mountains are 35 miles north of where I took this picture.

Tundra lakes. I took this picture after spooking some caribou out of the scene, including one ambiguous maybe-bull.

The evening moose. I watched this one from the road for a while with a young couple who had a moose tag, but he was safely protected by Alaska's antler "slot limit." At this point Sunday evening, I was frustrated to have seen a bull moose but no certain bull caribou.

Alaska Range panorama. The high peak in the center/left is Mount Deborah, with Hess Mountain just to its right. The taller but more distant mountain on the right side of the panorama is Mount Hayes.

Two hunters walking out of the Clearwater Mountains. These guys carried heavy packs. They told me the mountains were loaded with caribou, about eight miles in off the road. Two days later, those caribou would come down near the road and provide intense hunting action.

Alaska Range during a stalk. My Sunday afternoon hunt on a small mountaintop south of the road around mile 96 led me to shoot this panorama during a break from chasing caribou.

Oops, was that a bull?. The one on the left with a calf behind it might have been a bull. That's the one that spotted me as I screwed around taking pictures, sneaking up on what I thought were all cows. I only realized as they ran off that this might have been a bull, and I can't tell from the picture any better than I could tell in person.

The Maclaren Glacier. This massive glacier ten miles north of the road is the source of the Maclaren River, which marked the eastern boundary of my hunting area. I think the high peak on the right is 11,400-foot Mount McGinnis.
