Hex Mayflies
Hexagenia limbata

The famous nocturnal Hex hatch of the Midwest (and a few other lucky locations) stirs to the surface mythically large brown trout that only touch streamers for the rest of the year.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

Biography & Thoughts
Former stream trout fisher for many years. Now fish only by boat. I have first hand experience with the sorry practice of stocking trout in a stream containing wild trout. The hatchery fish never survive and after a month are as skinny as snakes (the ones that are still alive).
Never release a hatchery trout, always kill and eat it.

My favorite trout stream picture; below, shows what a first class trout river looks like. The lack of stream gradient means that this river is not subject to the roaring scouring floods so common here in PA. that wipe out everything in the river.
