Salmonflies
Pteronarcys californica

The giant Salmonflies of the Western mountains are legendary for their proclivity to elicit consistent dry-fly action and ferocious strikes.

27" brown trout, my largest ever. It was the sub-dominant fish in its pool. After this, I hooked the bigger one, but I couldn't land it.

This 11 pound male king salmon was the only one in his pod willing to hit a fly, apparently. Well, I'm not complaining--what a fight! He's not big for a King, but it was a fun catch anyway.
This stretch of a famous Great Lakes salmon tributary produced a nice king for me in the evening after this picture.

Several anglers await a disappointingly sparse morning run of salmon from Lake Ontario.

This beautiful, remote stretch of one of the lesser-known large Catskill trout streams produced my only trout in two days of slow fishing, a 9 inch brown. Better than nothing! In fact, even "nothing" in this setting is really something!

I love the look of this tiny wilderness stream in the Catskills. It hasn't cut any sort of stream channel down into the ground. Instead, it just bubbles down over the boulders on the surface of a hill.

Salmon Creek in New York
The crystal clear water of this small northeastern trout stream makes wading tricky since everything looks deceptively shallow. Those of us accustomed to judging depth by the fading clarity in stained water have a little trouble adjusting our perception to such clear streams.
